The Portland Trail Blazers experienced again another difficult week, starting their seven-game road trip with three straight losses. The Blazers’ losing run now stands at nine games after their losses to the Miami Heat, Atlanta Hawks, and Houston Rockets all came by double digits.

Given how frequently Portland lost by large margins of victory, a number of the Blazers’ counting statistics showed the team’s difficulties. Even still, a few players managed to appear good in spite of their enormous losses. Dalano Banton, this week’s Blazer of the Week, is one of such players.

Banton joined the Blazers at the trade deadline for almost nothing, yet in the latter part of the season, he has emerged as a key player. Banton averaged 23.6 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game this week alone, setting career highs with 31 points and nine assists against the Hawks.

Because of his rare mix of size and quickness at the point guard position, Banton is able to take advantage of matchups with players that the other side puts on him. Because of Banton’s speed, players of his height will be driven past by other point guards who are frequently too tiny. In his brief time here, he has already made a name for himself by forcing defenses to adapt to him.

Throughout his career, Banton’s 3-point shooting has been a big source of worry. Banton, though, has shown a lot of promise in that area since coming to Portland. This week, he attempted eight three-pointers, including five against the Hawks, which tied a career-high.

Even though Banton’s percentage for the week was only 29.6%, his desire to shoot has increased, and his overall Blazer percentage is higher than his career average, demonstrating the progress he has made.
