Seattle — Jarren Duran converted numerous singles into doubles last season thanks to his quick thinking, hustle, and accurate readings.

With 34 doubles in a season, the speedster tied for second place among Red Sox batters. Manager Alex Cora calculated in July that ten of Duran’s 26 doubles at the time were singles that he converted to doubles because to his readings and pace.

When rookie center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela used his quickness and heads-up base running to transform a double into a triple in Thursday’s Boston regular season opener, he resembled Duran in every way.

Rafaela read the play, which is evident in our really strong scouting report on him, Duran said prior to Friday’s 1-0 loss to Seattle. “He was looking at the play the entire time, literally.” He read really well. He didn’t even falter in his steps. He continued without stopping. He was aware of his desire. Some guys might read the play, in my opinion, and then leave. But he remained devoted the entire time. So when we saw him round second, we were going crazy in the dugout. It was ill.

Rafaela stated, “I was thinking three as soon as I hit the ball.” Take a careful look at the box. I saw an opening to go up to third. I accepted the risk because I have faith in my quickness.

Last year, Duran’s speed (converting singles into doubles and swiping 24 bases) significantly improved Boston’s offensive output. The Red Sox may now have two young players who are capable of doing it.

The way Duran’s speed affects games was something manager Alex Cora talked about prior to Friday’s contest.

“We were pretty good last year when he was playing. After that, he was injured, and we didn’t win many games, Cora remarked. “He had his moments of low morale, but the infectious energy is what really gets me.” When
