Opening Day, when the Major League Baseball season kicks off, is typically a day full with anticipation and hope for baseball fans.
However, this most recent phase of the Oakland Athletics’ history isn’t something to rejoice over for a lot of nearby supporters of the soon-to-be defunct Oakland Athletics. As team management and owner John Fisher proceed with their plans to transfer the team to Las Vegas, hundreds of protesters organized a game boycott on Thursday night in the parking lot of the Oakland Coliseum.

Rather from entering the stadium to watch the game, supporters tailgated outside, flaunting their dissatisfaction with the A’s organization through merchandising and wearing shirts and placards that said “Sell.”
“The supporters will always be present,” stated Bryan Johansen, the mastermind behind the boycott and co-owner of the Last Dive Bar, an internet retailer offering memorabilia honoring the Coliseum’s past. We work in this manner. We perform for our squad and the city. The fact that the team isn’t interested is just awful.”

Bryan Kelder, a 33-year-old artist from Oakland, claimed that taking part in the boycott gave him mixed feelings. The reason that brought them together was tragic, even if it was heartwarming to see so many other fans there to support one other.
As Kelder painted the scene in the parking lot, he thought, “This is the ambiance and the feelings of the painting I need to capture.” “The beautiful thing is that we are out here enjoying this, and the heartbreaking thing is that it is leaving.”

The protest on Thursday was the most recent in a series of protests by a fan base that holds Fisher accountable for the team’s current situation.
